2013December05_Spin_AIt’s true there’s nothing nicer than a scenic bike ride through a stunning landscape. However, when it comes to the week-in-week-out demands of getting a great workout, indoor cycling with spin classes, can offer a great alternative. And this is especially the case when the sun is too strong or the wind really starts to blow. Spin is the ultimate cycling for all seasons!

The sun on your face, the wind in your hair; it all sounds idyllic and it’s true that a leisurely bike ride through the countryside can be a wonderful way to explore and keep fit at the same time. However, there are many advantages to spin classes which offer the same climate come rain or shine:

  • No wrapping up in the cold – If you just jump on a bike in cold weather and then simply set off you may be at risk of injuring yourself because you’re not warmed up enough. There is also the hassle of having to wrap up to keep warm throughout your ride.

  • No damaging sun and sunburn when it’s hot – While everybody loves a sunny day, the sun can be a strong force to be reckoned with when you’re involved with outdoor sports. If you want to cycle regularly then you will need sunscreen each time you go out for a ride and you’ll risk getting sunburn if you don’t keep protected.

  • No sweating in the sun or having to take off layers – A spin class can be a cooling environment to work out in. Even though you will work up a sweat indoors the air-conditioning allows you to get stuck in for longer than you might outside on a hot day.

  • No need for outfits to match the seasons – Throwing your spin outfit into your bag is easy and no-fuss. Cycling in all weathers requires far more gear so that you can layer clothes and not only fit in with the seasons but the terrain too.

  • No need for lights or having problems seeing where you’re going – Focusing on exercise with the music going and the lights on can be uplifting. You might not welcome the added challenge of having to use your lights if the weather takes a turn for the worst or if the light falls. Fog and mist can also obscure vision out on the road which can be a danger too.

  • No danger from traffic – A cycle track or quiet path might be safer for cyclists but it’s not always easy or convenient to ride on roads where there are no cars. The problem with traffic is that it is the enemy of cyclists, especially if you are inexperienced or a little nervous.

  • No risk of a flat tire far from anywhere – You’ve done a long ride and are far from home when you get a flat. If you’re organized you should have a kit to fix your bike before you get back on and continue on your merry way. However, getting a flat on the road can be a pain and you may end up being stranded and having to walk some of the way. In a spin class the maintenance of your bike is not your responsibility and if you have a problem you can simply hop off and hop on another bike.

  • No rain and ice – Skidding on black ice or feeling drops of cold rain trickling down your neck aren’t the elements to enamor you of the Great Outdoors every day of the week. Finding the motivation to join a fun spin class can be easier to find than the impetus to go out in all weathers.

Lock up your bike for a fair weather day and jump on a spin cycle for a far more climate-friendly journey toward fitness.
